Tip Tuesday: Using wall paper in small scales

Todays Tip comes from me. I have been thinking about wall paper alot lately. Now...I know most of us have an unhealthy hatred and have been wronged by wall paper in the past. But it has come such a long way in the last few years. There are so many designs and colors and textures that you can get from wallpaper that you cannot get from paint. 

So my tip to you is to use it in small scales if you are afraid of wall paper. 

Back some shelves or book cases

By backing a shelf with wall paper it gives the room a little unexpected punch or pattern and color.

Frame it out

I love to suggest framing out wall paper. It is a good way to create an art piece. Some wall paper is just too busy to do a WHOLE room in. So this is a good way to create interest in a small scale.

Now go find something to wall paper!

Designer Tip Tuesday: Devani from Savvy Classic

I am so excited about todays "Designer Tip". Devani is amazing and I actually met her in design school where she taught my class on Historic Architecture and Design. This girl knows her stuff! Here is her tip for us today...

Hello friends-I'm Devanie Roberts from Savvy Classic and I'm honored that Kayla has invited me to bring you today's Designer Tip Tuesday!

When I talk to people that aren't designers they often say things to me like "I wish I was more creative" or "Where can I begin? I'm overwhelmed with how much I want to do but I have a small budget." My tip to anyone who has asks these questions is to start small. What's a more perfect place than your closet? Who doesn't want to feel like a glamour goddess every time you're deciding what to wear? I know I'd be excited to wake up every morning and open the doors to my own little Chic Boutique!

This walk-in wonderland is sophisticated and whimsical in one little package. The black and white feature wall makes a bold statement without overwhelming the space. I love the 3/4 height hook-mounted chair rail for a place to hang accessories and maybe even to plan your next day's outfit. The vintage suitcases add an extra pop of pattern and color and of course a beautiful storage solution (perhaps a place to store out-of-season clothing). And while it may not be the case, the chandelier still announces to you, "check out your designer wardrobe, girl!"

If you're not yet blessed with walk-in real estate, try something like this cheery double-door space. You'll feel like Marie-Antoinette, minus the awkward attendants watching you get dressed! This solution is simple- you could do what is shown here by using a large print wallpaper throughout, or make it a little easier on yourself and paint the inside walls and only wallpaper the door panels. You could even put some photos of cute outfits you've found in magazines as inspiration. Go crazy- you're the goddess here!

If you just so happen to be one of the people who has extra storage and doesn't need every closet in your house for clothes, why not open up your room by creating a home office niche? My wise and beautiful Mother turned hers into a sewing space- it's her own divine domain! So take my advice and find a small space where you can express yourself in a big way!

My Designer Tip for today is to have at least one black element to ground every room. Black grounds a space while white and light colors give relief. Of course, the glamour that comes from touches of black are an added bonus :)

Client Nursery E-Design

Every once in a while I get really low budgets for bedrooms. Which I like a lot because one...I don't feel like the only person who has a husband still in school and can't afford a 15,000 living room and two...it keeps me on my feet and forces me to get creative. 

I had the chance of doing a nursery Design for a client. Her and her kids are so cute. She has a baby boy and toddler girl living in the same room size 9x12. Her husband is going to school but she still wanted to have a cohesive area where the babies could not only sleep but play. 

Challenges: No painting the white walls. $150 Budget. And two cribs.

So this is what we came up with...

1-3 Fabrics for bedding.

6-7 Photo frame Ideas

9-Painted area rug

She was so excited! Even though it is not much of a budget she was willing to put in the work. I can't wait to see how the room turns out. =) 

So my designer tip tuesday that was suppose to be yesterday but I am linking it to this project!

Tip: If you are having a low budget...make sure you are realizing all the work YOU will have to do. Low budgets = a lot of DIY. Which is fine but be ready to get down and dirty on sewing machine and get your paint clothes on. So be realistic when you are setting a budget and ask yourself...how much work do I want to do?

See how much life and style these rooms have because they are filled with beautiful colors? It's especially easy to bring in some color with accessories that you can mix and match around. 

Even if you aren't so inclined to surround yourself with bright colors, the same tip can be applied to even a neutral room- one pop of color will liven up the room.

Use Wallpaper to Liven up a Room

For so many years we shied away from wallpaper in our homes.  Lately it's made a huge resurgence on the design scene.  It's a great way to add drama even if you chose not to wallpaper a whole room.   A little bit goes a long way.  Try wallpapering only one wall and carry the colours throughout the room.

Use wallpaper in a tiny powder room. It looks glamorous and you completely forget about the size of the room.

If bright and bold is too much of a risk you can take a safer route and go with a nature inspired theme.

Invest in designer fabrics.

Designer fabrics can be expensive but are always worth it.

If you are running on a tight budget, make the fabric count by using it in a dramatic way.

This room is a perfect example of how a small amount of fabric can make a big impact.

Designer Tip Tuesday: Choosing Paint Colors

Lots of people ask me how to paint and how to choose paint colors. I am not the expert on painting techniques...everyone is different...but I came up with 3 tips that make it a little easier to decide on the color for you space.

#1-Pick an Inspirational Item or Accessory

In my experience it is easier for Homeowners to find something they love to inspire the room and then to go off that. Remember...it is much easier to match a paint color to an accessory than it is to match an accessory to a paint color. So find an item that you love and create your space around that.

#2--Think About Your Mood 

Decide on what feeling or mood you are trying to create in the space. If you are wanted to create energy, drama or intimacy... go for bold, bright, dark, and warm paint colors. But if you are wanting to have it be a relaxing, formal and quiet space...go with neutrals, pastels, and lighter colors. This one little tip will help you narrow down your color palette tremendously.

#3--Paint and Observe

Before finalizing a paint color you should ALWAYS paint a little swatch of it on your wall! This is SOOO important and will save you a lot of heartache and money in the end. Paint colors look different in different lighting. Natural light shows true color, incandescent lighting brings out warm tones and yellows and fluorescent lighting casts a sharp blue tone. So observe the color for a few days on the wall and decide whether or not you like it in every part of the day.
